Our clients for this project both spent several years living in Australia where they enjoyed the climate of sunshine, light and outdoor living. Here in Scotland and in the steading conversion house, the planning of the rooms and the small scale of the windows restricted light, and the connection to the private south facing garden. Our modest proposal and response to the brief was to demolished the uninsulated narrow garden room, accessed from a dark living room, and create an open plan living space with folding doors to connect to a new terrace, relocate the kitchen and dinning room from the rear of the house, and widen the entrance hall. We used sliding doors that retract in the walls to allow the spaces to be closed off or opened up depending on the social or private occasions. We provided an interior design service and monitored the site works with the selected contractor.
