On this project we were introduced to our Client by recommendation. The initial reaction, and in our opinion a false reaction to designing a garage conversion is that its nothing special and your creativity is limited. Our approach was to try and craft a beautiful little space that calms the mind ready fro learning. Our Client is a private mathematics tutor and she had the idea of utilising their double garage into a small learning studio. We openly discussed her budget and the principle elements of the brief. 80% of the original garage was retained. We extended the size of the floor area to the south by 200cm, and insulated the existing walls and roof. The design is modest and simple. The principle space is open and flexible for desk orientations with a traditional blackboard on one wall. New steelwork allowed the formation of large windows / doors and balcony facing south, due to the level changes, the studio space sits above the garden and now interacts with the existing cherry tree canopy. This is the tree you pass underneath when entering the studio. The new space has a shower and wc room to the rear, kitchen pipework has been installed. The heating is all underfloor with no wall radiators, this, together with an alternative skirting detail reduces the clutter of the single space. The flooring is an oil finished bleached oak wide board. We prepared a furniture and interior design for this project.
